Christmas Family Home Evening

The meaning of Christmas

This Family Home Evening was so much fun for the entire family!  We hope that you enjoy it too.  Before you get started you will need a few things:

Preparation:

1. Download and print "Christ's Christmas Box" and "Christmas List Stationery".  Grab them here.

2. Cut out the "boxes".  Do this in advance so that the cutting is not a distraction during the lesson

3. Get one brad for each box

4. Get one elastic band for each box

5. You will need a few pieces of scotch tape to hold the box closed.

6. You should also have some of this stationery ready and some pencils ready for the kids to write Christmas lists.

LESSON

We started out this lesson with some pretty excited kids because I told them that we were going to be writing Christmas Lists.  After our opening song and prayer we all gathered around the table and started writing our letters.  We had a blast just talking about how much fun Christmas was going to be.

After we wrote our letters we all gathered back together in the family room for the more spiritual part of the lesson.

At this point we had a great discussion.

1. Kids, why do we have Christmas?  Do we have Christmas so we can get all the gifts that we have listed on these pieces of paper?

2. Why do we celebrate Christmas?

3. Whose birthday is it?

4. Why are we writing lists of what WE want if it is really Christs birthday?  Shouldn't we be giving gifts to Christ?

5. Is it possible to give Christ a gift for HIS birthday?

6. Who gave gifts to Christ when he was born? (Wise men)

7. How can WE give gifts to Christ?

8. What are some gifts that Christ might want for Christmas?

9. What are some gifts that you might want to give to Christ for Christmas this year? (serve eachother, be kind, be obedient to the commandments, etc)

So kids now we are going to prepare a gift for Christ for Christmas.  Would you like to do that?  First we are going to list on pieces of paper the things that we plan to give to Christ for Christmas.  We are going to list things on the pieces of paper things that we plan to DO for Christ for Christmas.

At this point we gathered back around the kitchen table again to write our letters to Christ.

Than after writing down the thing that we wanted to do for Christ and give to Christ we made the boxes that our gifts would go in.  The boxes are super easy.

1. Fold the box like this:

2. You will also want to fold it at each corner of the box.

3. Glue the flaps that say "glue" on them.

4. You will end up with a box that is open on one side.  You will want to fold your "gift letters to Christ" and put them inside the box.

5. Write your name on the top of the box.

6. Put a brad through the center of the bow.  After you attach the brad, you will then want to use a small piece of scotch tape to hold your gift box closed.

7. Attach a rubber band to the brad so that you can hang your "Gift to Christ" to the Christmas tree.
