Opening Song: Follow The Prophet

Opening Prayer: ________________________

Lesson

Show the child the Life Saver candies and ask them what a Life Saver is.

Some ideas of things to discuss:

  • Mommy and Daddy are Life-Savers because they protects us.
  • The Holy Ghost is a Life Saver because he can warn us of danger.
  • The word of wisdom is a Life-Saver because it protects us from things that can hust our bodies.

Show your children the Bingo Board and call it a Life Saver Board. Discuss how each thing on the board is a Life Saver.

Questions:

  1. What is General Conference?
  2. Who speaks at General Conference?
  3. What do the General Authorities talk about at General Conference?

Reveal to the children that General Conference is a treasure trove of Life Savers. Those who listen carefully to General Conference find all sorts of sweet Life-Savers that they get to take with them after Conference. But those who do not listen to conference miss out on the treasure.

  1. Do you want some of the treasure? Or do you want to miss out?

Game

Today we are going to play a game that will teach you how to find all the Life-Savers in conference. This game will be a "dress rehersal" for the real General Conference. We will teach you how to do it now so that on the day of conference you will be ready.

Game Instructions:

  1. Give each child a bingo board and a package of Life Savers.
  2. Explain that everything on the bingo board is a "Life Saver"
  3. Each time that they hear the speaker talk about or say a word on the board they get to mark the square with one of their candy Life Savers.
  4. See how many "Life-Savers" are discussed during the talk
  5. Try to get bingo
  6. If they get bingo, at the end of the talk they get to eat the Life-Savers that are on the game board.
  7. During the talk try to figure out what the main subject or "Life Saver" President Monson is talking about.

Have an adult read the talk by President Monson.  It is easier to read it for younger children because you can pause when they are putting down their pieces.  You can also emphasize words so that they hear them. You many want to shorten or modify the talk for very young children.  For older children you can watch the video on lds.org.

After the talk is over talk to the children about the talk.  Point out that President Monson spoke about many Life-Savers in our lives.  However, the emphasis in his talk was about service.  Point out that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the only church on the earth that has a Prophet who communicates with God.  Ask them if they think that we should be listening to and following his direction.  If we DO want to listen to the Prophet then it is important that we become Life-Savers to others by doing service for those around us.

Challenge:

  • Make a special effort to follow the advise that President Monson gave in his talk.  Try to do one act of service each day this week.

Closing Prayer (bless the treat!):____________________

Snack

  • If you get Bingo you get to eat all the Life-Savers on the board.  You get to keep the rest of the Life-Savers and you get to eat one each time that you do an act of service for someone.
