December Theme:
Scriptures teach me about the Savior's
birth and second coming.

“For the Son of Man shall come in
the glory of His Father with His
angels; and then he shall reward
every man according to his
works."
(Matthew 16:27)

Tell Me The Stories of Jesus
Children’s Songbook, 57

Scriptures
Prior to this lesson, earlier in the day give each child a task that they should complete. Write it down on a piece of paper. Communicate it to them verbally as well as on the paper. Bring chocolate kisses to the lesson.
Read Matthew 16:27
Today I asked everyone to complete a task. I want to know how everyone did on their task. Go around the room and “reward” each child according to their works. If they did a great job on their task give them several “kisses”. (You asking was like the Holy Ghost, you writing the task on paper is like the scriptures.)
How did that make you feel? If you did a good job you probably felt great. You probably felt disappointed if you did not.
How was this little exercise similar to the second coming of Christ mentioned in the scripture?
The scriptures are a model for how we should act. If we follow them then when Christ comes, we will not feel disappointed.
How do the scriptures teach us how we should act? (Choose a story from Christ’s life and show the children how we can follow Christ by behaving the same way Christ does in the scriptures.)
Have you ever made a decision about how you should act based upon a story you heard in the scriptures?
Discuss how you can make scripture study a part of your families daily lives so that you will not be disappointed when Christ comes.

For your activity do a scripture reading challenge.
Prior to the lesson visit the webpage: http://scriptures4kids.com/scripturereading-challenge/challenge.html
Choose a scripture reading chart and print one out for each family member. Make sure that you have a set of scriptures ready for each family member. Give each member of the family a chart.
As a family make a goal to read for a certain number of days. Make a plan for filling out your chart and decide on a reward that you will do as a family when you complete your goal.
Discuss how you will make a special effort to find Christ in the scriptures. As you do the challenge discuss as a family Christ’s influence on the scriptures.

Chocolate Chip Cookies
The scriptures are like chocolate chip cookies. The scriptures are the cookie and the pieces of chocolate are like little kisses that Heavenly Father gives you while you are reading. From time to time when you are reading you might feel a sweet sense of His love.
Watch out for His kisses when you read!
